Match Report: Yorkshire Post: 9th February 1920:

MEXBOROUGH TOWN v LEEDS UNITED.

At Mexborough before 3,000 spectators. The Leeds team included Smithand Soar who were making their debut, while Mexborough fielded the same eleven that defeated Chesterfield last week. The game was very disappointing, and for the most part completely lacking in incident. Rounds was called upon to fist out a shot from Redfern early in the game., and saved a number of timesbefore he was beaten, after about twenty-five minutes' play by Tom Smelt. Mexborough's second goal was the result of an individual effort by Redfern. In the second half this same player was brought down when making tracks for goal. and a penalty was awarded. Rounds, however, made a splendid clearance. For the United Birtles and Owen were the most dangerous partnership, and both had good shots. In the second half the home team had the upper hand and from the left especially the Leeds goal had a series of narrow escapes.Rounds was quite cool during this critical period, and brought off some splendid saves. In the closing stages Tillotson, the right half, appeared badly crocked, and a few minutes before the end of the game he retired from the field.
